§ 305 English Learner Instruction Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •Schools must ask parents and the community for ideas on how to teach kids, especially those learning English.
  • •All kids, including those learning English, must get help to learn English well and keep up with their schoolwork.
  • •Schools must have special programs to help kids who don’t speak English learn it fast.
  • •Schools can also teach English-speaking kids another language if parents and the community want it.

Example

A school has many kids who speak Spanish at home but are learning English. The school asks parents how best to teach these kids.

The school must create a program to help these kids learn English while also teaching them math, science, and other subjects. They might also offer Spanish classes for English-speaking kids if parents want it.
