§ 24104 Disability Retirement Time Limits

• •If someone gets disability retirement because of a problem like an injury or illness, but they can still get better or work again, the board can say the retirement money only lasts for up to 2 years.
• •After 2 years, the money stops unless the board says it’s okay to keep getting it.
• •If the person’s problem is because they did drugs or alcohol on purpose, the board can also limit the retirement money to 2 years.

A firefighter gets hurt on the job and can’t work, so they get disability retirement money.

If the doctors think the firefighter can get better with therapy or learn a new job, the board might say they only get the retirement money for 2 years. After that, they have to check if the firefighter still needs the money or if they can work again.
