§ 22829 Out-Of-State Service Credit Payments

Key Takeaways

  • •This rule is for people who want to count work they did in another state toward their retirement.
  • •You have to pay extra money to get credit for that out-of-state work.
  • •The amount you pay depends on your age when you ask for this and your highest salary in the last few years.
  • •You must pay the full amount in one go, and if you don’t pay within 30 days, your request gets canceled.

Example

A teacher worked in Texas for 5 years before moving to California. Now, they want those 5 years to count toward their California retirement.

The teacher must pay extra money based on their current age and their highest salary in the last few years. If they don’t pay the full amount within 30 days, they lose the chance to add those years.

(d) Any payment that a member may make to the system to obtain credit for out-of-state service shall be paid in full before a member or beneficiary may receive any adjustment in the appropriate allowance due date because of that payment. (f) Contributions for out-of-state service credit shall be made in a lump sum. (g) If the payment election described in subdivision (b) is not received at the system’s headquarters office within 30 days of receiving a bill for this purchase from the system, the election shall be canceled.
