§ 22803 Teaching Service Credit Purchase

Key Takeaways

  • •Teachers in California can buy extra credit for their retirement if they worked in certain teaching jobs not covered by another retirement plan.
  • •This includes teaching at places like the University of California, schools for the deaf or blind, or even the Peace Corps.
  • •You can also get credit for time off like maternity/paternity leave or family medical leave, but there are limits (like 2 years for parental leave or 12 weeks for family medical leave).
  • •You can’t get credit for the same work if you’re already getting retirement benefits from another California public retirement system.

Example

A teacher works at a public school for 5 years, then takes 1 year off for maternity leave, and later teaches at a Job Corps center for 1 year before returning to public school.

The teacher can buy extra retirement credit for the maternity leave (up to 2 years allowed) and the Job Corps teaching time (up to 2 years allowed). But if she already gets retirement credit for that Job Corps time from another system, she can’t double-count it.
