§ 22257 Retirement Fund Investment Managers

Key Takeaways

  • •The board can hire experts to manage retirement money.
  • •If the board picks and watches these experts carefully, they won’t be blamed if the experts make mistakes.
  • •The board doesn’t have to manage the money that the experts are handling.
  • •Putting rules about careful money handling in the expert’s contract helps prove the board did a good job picking them.

Example

A school’s retirement fund hires a company to invest its money.

If the school board checked the company’s background and kept an eye on their work, the board won’t get in trouble if the company loses some money. The board also doesn’t have to manage the money the company is handling.
