Key Takeaways

  • •The law says the board must study how to give health insurance, including vision and dental, to teachers, their families, and retired teachers.
  • •The study will check if retired teachers have trouble getting health insurance and how to mix it with Medicare.
  • •The state gives $200,000 to do this study. If they start giving health insurance later, they must pay back the $200,000 using fees from the people getting the insurance.

Example

A retired teacher named Mrs. Smith has no health insurance and struggles to pay for doctor visits.

The law requires the board to study how to help teachers like Mrs. Smith get health insurance. If they decide to offer it, the money spent on the study will be paid back using small fees from the insurance plans.
