§ 22170 Service Definition And Sunset

Key Takeaways

  • •This law defines 'service' as work you do for pay that counts toward your retirement benefits, as long as the money for that work isn't going into a special extra retirement fund.
  • •The people in charge will pick a date when they can start using these new rules. They have to tell everyone by putting it on their website before July 1, 2027.
  • •This law will stop working on the date they pick, and it will completely go away on July 1, 2027.

Example

Imagine you work at a school and part of your pay goes into your regular retirement fund. This work counts as 'service' under this law.

If you work and get paid, and that pay helps your retirement, it’s called 'service'. But if your pay goes into a special extra retirement fund, it doesn’t count as 'service' here.
