§ 17164 Lottery Bond Repayment Limits

Key Takeaways

  • •The state won't use its own money to pay back lottery bonds if lottery money runs out.
  • •If lottery money isn't enough to pay back bonds, the state's main money pot (General Fund) can't be used to cover it.
  • •This law makes sure the state doesn't take on extra debt because of lottery bonds.

Example

Imagine the state sells lottery tickets to raise money for building schools. They promise to pay back investors with lottery money, but not enough tickets are sold.

The state can't dip into its regular money (like taxes) to pay back those investors. The investors only get paid if the lottery makes enough money.
