§ 15201 Petition Hearing Notice Requirements

When most members of a school board sign a petition, the county supervisors must set a hearing within 30 days and tell the public about it in a local newspaper for at least 10 days before the hearing.

Key Takeaways

  • •A petition needs a majority of board members' signatures to start the process.
  • •The hearing must be scheduled within 30 days of getting the petition.
  • •A notice about the hearing has to be printed in a newspaper for at least 10 days before the hearing.
  • •If the school district has no newspaper, the notice goes in the county‑seat newspaper.

Example

A group of school board members signs a petition to change the school lunch menu.

The county supervisors have to pick a date for a public hearing no later than 30 days after they get the petition, and they must publish a notice about the hearing in the local newspaper for 10 days before the hearing so parents and teachers can know about it.
