§ 1044 County Board Copyright Ownership

County school boards can claim ownership of copyrights for anything they create, and any money earned from those copyrights goes to the board.

Key Takeaways

  • •The board can get copyrights for works it makes.
  • •All money from those copyrights belongs to the board.
  • •This applies to any copyrightable work the board develops.

Example

A group of teachers writes a new science textbook for the district.

The school board can register the textbook under its own name, and any royalties the book earns will be paid to the board, not the individual teachers.
