§ 1182 Out-Of-State Document Verification

This law lets a document be notarized or proven outside of this state as long as it's done by certain officials in the U.S.

Key Takeaways

  • •Documents can be notarized or proven by officials in any U.S. state or federal court.
  • •The notarization is valid in this state even if it happened elsewhere.
  • •Only certain officials—judges, clerks, commissioners, notaries, or other state officers—can do it.

Example

A person in California signs a contract and needs it notarized, but they are traveling in New York.

Because a notary public in New York can act under this rule, the contract can be notarized there and still be valid in California.
