§ 5230 Local Advertising Display Restrictions

Key Takeaways

  • •Local governments can make their own rules about signs near roads, but these rules must be at least as strict as the state's rules.
  • •They can't let people put up signs that break the state's rules.
  • •Before making these rules, they have to follow the steps in Section 5412.

Example

A city wants to put up a big billboard near a busy street.

The city must first check the state's rules about billboards. If the state says billboards can't be bigger than 10 feet tall, the city can't allow a 15-foot-tall billboard. They also have to follow the steps in Section 5412 before making any new rules.
