§ 4980 Marriage And Family Therapy Licensing

Key Takeaways

  • •You need a special license to work as a marriage and family therapist in California.
  • •You can't call yourself a marriage therapist or use titles like 'M.F.T.' unless you have this license.
  • •Other licensed professionals (like psychologists) can do marriage therapy but can't say they have a marriage therapist license unless they do.

Example

If your neighbor starts calling themselves a 'family counselor' and charging money to help couples fix their problems, but they don’t have the right license.

They’re breaking the law because only people with a special marriage and family therapist license can do that job or use those titles.
