§ 20700 Industrial Hygiene Definitions

Key Takeaways

  • •Industrial hygiene is about keeping workers and people in a community safe from things that can make them sick or uncomfortable at work or where they live.
  • •A Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is someone who has gone to school, worked in the field, and passed a test to prove they know how to keep people safe from work hazards.
  • •The group that certifies these experts must be a professional organization that makes sure the CIHs know their stuff by giving them tough tests and checking their work.

Example

Imagine a factory where workers are getting sick because of fumes from chemicals they use.

An industrial hygienist would figure out what’s making the workers sick, like bad air or loud noises, and find ways to fix it. A CIH is the expert who’s officially trained and tested to handle these problems.
