§ 19532 Racing Week Limits Zones

Key Takeaways

  • •Horse racing in the northern part of the state can only happen for up to 35 weeks a year.
  • •Horse racing in the central part of the state can only happen for up to 17 weeks a year, unless they split the races into two separate times, then it can be up to 20 weeks.
  • •The rules don’t take away any racing weeks that were already given out in 1980 or to the California State Fair.
  • •The board can still give racing weeks to private groups that rent the California State Fair’s racetrack.

Example

A racetrack in the central part of the state wants to have horse races for 18 weeks in a row.

They can’t do it because the law says they can only have up to 17 weeks unless they split the races into two separate times. If they split it, they can have up to 20 weeks total.
