Key Takeaways

  • •There is a group called the State Athletic Commission with 7 members who make rules about sports like boxing or MMA.
  • •The Governor picks 5 members, and the Senate and Assembly leaders each pick 1. The Senate must approve the Governor's picks.
  • •No one who recently worked in sports (like a fighter, referee, or promoter) can be on the commission.
  • •Members serve for 4 years, but they can't do more than 2 terms in a row.

Example

Imagine a famous boxing referee wants to join the State Athletic Commission.

They can't join if they were a referee in the last 2 years. The law says people who recently worked in sports can't be on the commission to keep things fair.
